Lots of thick ice in the first mile or so, then also quite a bit of ice on the ledges near the summit. I was very grateful for microspikes; using yaktrax or similar would have been just plain dangerous today. The areas that were not icy were very hard packed snow which made for some very fast hiking; I didn't ever even come close to breaking out my snowshoes, though if there was a substantial thaw and softening they might come in handy, as the snow on the Long Trail was pretty deep. There were some exposed rocks and running water at the lower elevations, though never enough to warrant removing my spikes. Very few postholes. Overall I really enjoyed the hike, though all the ice definitely meant that the trail is much less beginner friendly than it normally is during the winter. |
