Trails: Logging roads
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, September 30, 2012
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: parked where another car was at end of Tower Road. agree with Bryans assessment that high clearance cars could go a bit up the road from there but nothing really gained as major washouts in several places
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: one good sized dry crossing, post Irene, and one easy step across one that probably was the culprit that wiped out sections of this trail during Irene
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: aside from washouts down low good footing to the ridge where there was significant mud in places. handmade signs helped..the crazy sign at Dorset Peak is excellent. Old sign and somewhat of a trail bed remains on sign that decends to Danby side of the mountain. There is a major washout for a bit on the jeep road..there is a herdpath on the left side that is rapidly forming and offers great footing for the quarter mile or so

Comments
Comments: Way more time in the car then on this hike for sure but a good rainy day destination. Found the trailhead easily (thanks franklinsites.com) and started up the road. Met a couple from CT about .5 in that were descending and we chatted a bit. They had a trak log from Papa Bear that mirrored the reports that we had read. Some pretty good Irene damage along the path..once climbing though..and it was steady tho never really steep, this became an excellent walk in the woods. Several different paths and routes evident once to the ridge. We followed what made sense which ended up being Bryans route taking the second road to the right after the T jct..quick and easy left at upper jct brought us right to the canister and crazy sign. Love it!!

We backtracked and went back to main jct where a sign identified route to Danby, on the East side. We stayed on trail past the door knob tree to the tower where we dropped down to the Tie marked road which led us back to the original upper jeep road. Interesting trail things today with a rope noose, a tie, gas grill at the tower, lots of debris at the canister..much assorted rust along the way. Thanks Valerie for joining on this one!!
