I cocked a skeptical eyebrow when I noted the Boston Harbor Islands NP (34 islands) and SP (17 of those 34, operated by the DCR) in the AMC Mass. Trail Guide (9th Ed.). I had toured Georges Island (Fort Warren) in my youth, by boat, but didn't recall what you would call real hiking trails.
Spectacle Island, reclaimed from unsavory past uses with much of the Big Dig's diggings, only opened to the public in 2006, so is not even in the
Guide yet. It has 5 miles of easy paths to and around the North and South Drumlins that anchor the Island, the most of any Harbor Island, and North Drumlin, at 155 feet, is the highpoint of the Harbor Islands - sweeping vistas! The AMC Guide got it right. These views are an utter blast! |
