Hard to find elevation gain in MA hikes near home - we’re staying local per COVID - and since we did Wachusett a few days ago, we opted for here on a late-day start. We followed Franklin Sites’ (great as always) trail report on the alternate approach from the former ski area which totaled 900’ gain, about 200’ more than the typical Watatic loop. Easy to park and the back side of mountain in the former ski area was great for social distancing - saw just one person on ascent until we hit Watatic summit. A fair amount of ice on low lying roads and on Watatic ledges but it was mostly avoidable, so our spikes went for a ride today. Tomorrow’s rain storm may change that. Midstate/Wapack Tr was in great shape although past Nutting Hill the trail was heavily iced and probably requires spikes for northbound traffic - we stopped here so can’t report on this.
Many families out enjoying New Years Day in reasonable winter temps and light winds. |
