There was a little bit of everything on the AT on Saturday. Bare ground, patches of ice and snow, some snow and deep post-holed snow. We bare booted, wore spikes and snowshoes throughout the day. From Blotz Road to Grange Hall Road the snow was well packed and we just needed spikes. From Grange Hall Road to the railroad tracks we had bare ground going up Day Mountain, but needed spikes on the descent. We wore either spikes or bare booted the first few miles north from Dalton, but from there to the Cobbles we wore snowshoes. The snow was softening and about a foot deep, with four miles of 6-10" postholes. A gorgeous day! |
