The trail from the parking lot to the base of the Pine Hill Tr. was quite ice covered early in the day. Light traction was helpful although there were hikers skirting the icy sections. Once on the Pine Hill Tr. we removed our micro spikes. The stair step rocks were clear and dry for most of the trail. Once the auto road was reached we followed that to the summit. There was snow and packed snow/ice at first on the road then clear pavement to the top. The summit is completely clear. The Huntington Tr seemed popular due to the dry conditions of the trail thanks to its southern exposure. We descended the way we hiked up. By this time of late morning on a 65 degree day the ice was slush. We never needed our micro spikes. Note that the auto road is crossed by the ski area slopes in several places. The skier traffic was heavy. A quick dash across the slopes would require spikes if your plan is to ascend the auto road. Too many people were hiking in sneakers in these muddy, wet and icy conditions. |
