 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
The biggest problem encountered is damage from ATV's...now don't get me wrong I am an avid ATV rider. Whoops and water holes that have been left unrepaired for years make for a nasty hike/bike/walk. It is a shame that Massachusetts can't or won't adopt property laws like Maine, where you can use an established trail on private property and the trail is maintained by funds from ATV registrations and Local Clubs. Then sections like this would be called "Multi-Use Trail" and would be usable by ALL. There simply is no way to stop illegal riding, so why not let them ride and have them pay to make the trail accessible to everyone. I'm sure if there wasn't a liability issue, then National Grid would love to have their access roads maintained, I know Hikers and Bikers would. Just saying?? |

Bay Circuit Trail (Map 12 & 13)
I wanted to attempt the Bay Circuit trail near where I live. From what I can tell most of the trail is on road, but some sections are trail. I decided to hit the largest trail section closest to home, the Hockomock swamp...it's eerie, but beautiful. I was dropped off at the gate on Maple Street in West Bridgewater and was going to head west as far as possible. The trail is clearly marked with white rectangle blazes, but damage from ATV's (see above) made for slow going. I finally called for a pickup after about 4 miles...that is the length of ATV trail in question. Most of the other sections of trail heading west are either road or appear to cross maintained hiking/biking trails (like the Borderland State Park section). Maybe the rest of the trail is better? |
