Hiking Trail Conditions Report

Peaks Crow Hills, MA
Trails
Trails: Midstate Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, August 20, 2011
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked one car at Wachusett Ski area. Plenty of room. Other car we spotted at Jewell Hill Road. Only room for a couple of cars on Jewell hill. Someone else parked a car on Rt 12 across the trail (abandoned Whitney Hill Road) and there looked to be room for another car. So 4 cars more or less could be comfortably parked at that location probably.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No water crossing problems.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A few blowdowns but no problems. Trail north of Muddy Pond shelter seriously needs to be brushed. It is very grown in with about head high growth, including thorny raspberry bushes. Under "Recommended Equipment" I would have checked off "machete" but there wasn't that option. Other parts of the trail look freshly brushed.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Nothing to report here.
Bugs
Bugs: Some mosquitoes but they weren't an issue as long as you kept moving. Mostly just an annoyance when they buzzed your ears.

Comments
Comments: CJ and my 7th section in the south to north Midstate trail journey. 15.29 miles (according to the book) from Wachusett Mountain to Jewell Hill Road in Ashburnham. Took us 7.5 hours. One more section will finish it off.
