Headed west away from storms in late afternoon 2:15 pm hike and it was just what the (hamstring rehab) doctor ordered.
Only 2 other cars in the lot when we arrived and one truck when we left.
Saw someone camping (Sleeping?) in the lean-to at 0.3 mi in on the NET from the junction.
Trace snow patches until the NET, after which slushy snow increased to 1-2 inches at about 0.7 mi from summit, but fully bare bootable.
I love this loop - love its gentle brook start, old ski tow equipment, persistent climb past the lean-to and fire tower reward of a view.
Love the smiley-face tree about 0.3 mi from summit.
While Grand Monadnock wore a cloud hat, Greylock and Stratton were evident at the summit.
Brisk winds at the top so we didn't linger - did speedy descent via gravel access road and cut-back trail to the parking lot.
Someone had poured heaps of gravel along eroded sections of the cut-back trail - not sure if that's a viable anti-erosion method but did mitigate some of the significant mud puddles on descent. Wish I'd have remembered the gaiters. |
