Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Pepperell Conservation Lands, MA
Trails
Trails: Jeff Smith Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, March 18, 2012
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: No parking to speak at the south-end Trailhead, on Jewett Rd. I pulled as far off the dirt road as I could, which seemed good enough.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant, Standing/Running Water on Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Many, including a couple that cross beaver dams. Poles recommended. The Trail crosses the Nissitisset River in Hollis, NH, at a point where it is 30 feet wide, not too deep, I gather, but flowing very briskly. I turned around there. Part of the south end, along Blood Brook, has been flooded by beavers, but a parallel route is pretty clear.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Much of the Trail is rough and without a clear foot-tread, but regular blue blazes made most of it clear.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Met a bunch, including two brutes who would have enjoyed a piece of my hide.
Bugs
Bugs: Some buzzing, but none biting yet.

Comments
Comments: The 4.5 mile segment I hiked included all of the Pepperell section and the first half-mile of the Hollis, NH section. Two tricky spots - (1) just north of the crossing of Stewart Brook, below Lawrence St., there is a poorly marked sharp left turn (before you reach a backyard); and (2) at Lawrence St., go right - in about 50 yards you will reach the beginning of the Trail through the Nashoba Conservation Land, on the other side.
