Comments
Comments: Hike was from the end of trail in West Bethel Maine. Bottom 2 miles of the trail can be easily barebooted - trail for first mile or so was wet snow only a few inchaes deep along with a few bare patches. The upper section (mile) of the trail from the sign for the caribou-speckled wilderness to the summit is less consolidated with loose powder - in many places 6 inches or more above the base. From this point to the summit snowshoes were needed to avoid postholeing .

Ran across a party of ten with snowshoes coming down the upper part of the Caribou trail. Also ran across one hiker coming down the mud brook trail that had bareboooted to the summit.

Beyond the sign for the Caribou-speckled wilderness the barebooter post-holed frequently - on occasion to several feet deep. I tried smoothed out as many of the post holes as possible to and from the summit.

A great day on a Maine summit, though the winds were almost as strong as those I've experienced in the presidentials.
