I was the first to head up Old Speck following the most recent snow. There was however a clear indentation where the snowshoe track has run throughout the season. This made navigation fairly easy. Trail breaking was not bad as there was a firm base under only about six inches new snow. The eyebrow trail appeared to have seen traffic from the bottom, however it was not so obvious at the top. After reaching the sub peak there is a spot where the snowshoe track veers off trail for a couple hundred feet and then rejoins the AT. I my accent tracks follow the false trail, but I stayed on the trail on the way down. I can see how someone made this mistake earlier in the season. Great views along the ridge. I did not climb the tower as the vertical iron latter was covered in black ice at the bottom and rime ice at the top. Neither of the other trails appeared to have had any recent traffic. Snowshoes worked great for the entire hike. I was back at the car at 1:00, so I geared up for the Baldpates (see next trip report). |
