Comments
Comments: A fantastic day to climb Katahdin with Heather. Temperatures were in the 50's all day, with gusty south winds, making for comfortable hiking. Checked out Blueberry Knoll before starting up to the peaks, a very worthwhile side trip. Hamlin Ridge was gorgeous, with huge views into the North Basin. I see they've officially reopened the North Peaks Trail, so long loops are now possible! Saw no one from the time we left Chimney Pond Trail, until Caribou Spring below Hamlin, nice to have some solitude on Katahdin. Plenty of groups descending Baxter as we climbed, and the summit was its usual busy self, with Boy Scout/Girl Scout groups, along with many others. Heather waffled for a while on the summit, but then decided to give Knife Edge a try. We took it slow and steady, and she did a fantastic job! Coming down off Chimney did her in, and she bypassed Pamola while I scrambled to the top. Helon Taylor for the descent was torturous on the legs, but the views continued to be stunning. Back to Roaring Brook by headlamp. An unforgettable trip to Baxter, and one more off the NE67 list, Hamlin was #58. In the single digits!
