Comments
Comments: Third car in at 5:50 on trail by 6:35. Made good time up Marston & got
to N Brother summit at 8:30 just as morning fog was burning off. Once I
could see Fort, then I started down the herd path. Although mostly over-
grown, the footpath is easy to follow. I never lost it for more than 5-10
feet. I gave a half hearted attempt to find the plane following several
paths til they ended but I didn't want to waste too much time & energy.
Back over N Brother to S Brother & the skies opened up, hail & rain, about
a tenth of a mile from the summit. After getting soaked on the summit,
I headed back down for Coe. The sun came back out & the climb up Coe was
much better. All four summits have 360 degree views but Coe might have the
best angles of Katahdin. It doesn't get much mention, but there is a half
mile slide, mostly ledge, right after you start down Coe. The ledge had
dried enough to make it down somewhat safely, but about halfway down a
thunderstorm came over Doubletop. I just made to the treeline when the
rain started again. The sun soon came back out & I slogged back to the
car. A good long hike with great views on all summits & the trip to Fort
is not difficult if your thinking about the NE100 in the future.
