Comments: A perfect fall day to hike Katahdin. Split up with my friends at Helon Taylor, and hiked up to Chimney Pond by myself. Nearly ran into the back end of a cow moose at the first viewpoint along the trail, she didn't care that I was there, and just kept eating. Talk about a close encounter! Met Mark and Jennifer, the rangers at Chimney Pond, then started up Cathedral. The trail starts off innocuous enough, then reaches the base of a boulder field at the bottom of the First Cathedral. The trail then climbs very steeply, with awesome scrambles, up to, and to the right of all three Cathedrals, before mellowing out near its junction with Saddle Trail. The summit was getting towards packed when I arrived at 11, with a gaggle of thru-hikers finishing their 2000+ mile journey. I waited around for almost an hour for my friends to come across the Knife Edge, and then hung with them the rest of the day. We descended to the Saddle, and climbed up to Hamlin, then went down Hamlin Ridge, which was definitely not the most gentle way to come down. Easily 120 mile visibility, as I could see Abraham, Spaulding, Sugarloaf, the Crockers, and the Bigelows on the horizon from Baxter Peak. Gotta love BSP.
