| Comments: |
Bare booted from the car until Fire Wardens started to go up. Moderate ice on the road, but today's snow gave a little cover on our return. Fire Wardens was well traveled with a hard crust that occasionally broke through. Not to much ice. Microspikes worked well. Same conditions on Horns Pond Trail. More postholing from the lean to leading to the summit. Also more thick ice heading to South Horn. Decided to head back down the AT. Started off well, but soon we encountered a lot of thick ice that was to much for microspikes. Negotiated carefully until the junction with Bigelow Range Trail, then it eased somewhat, but still ended up on my butt quite a bit. Temps were near 30 all day with light snow on and off. Absolutely no views from any vantage point today. Could not even see one Horn from the other. Still a fun day. |
