AT was well packed out up to Baldplate Lean To. About 100yds above the camp site the trail breaking started in about 4-8" of powder. There was some underlying ice, rock, and tree roots to watch out for as the base was not to deep. There were some bigger areas of underlying ice on the approach to west peak. The col between west and east was filled with drifts, some crusty layers that held and some that didn't. I switched to microspikes on the ascent to east peak. There was a lot of open rock with wind blown snow and ice. Got rewarded with sun this morning and good views. Temp was 5 at the start, but up to 20 at the end. The AT was marked well enough and easy to follow, including between the peaks with cairns. With the exception of east peak, I had snow shoes on the whole day. |
