North Brother, Fort Mountain, east summit and C54 crash site
Party of two. We'd both done Fort in summer and winter so knew the drill. Treed a cub at the Marston/Coe link junction. Didn't see Mom, and we retreated quickly, making a noisy circle clockwise to the Marston. We'd deduced the coordinates of the C54 and plugged them into the GPS. But moving along Fort's summit ridge, we found the herdpath, following it right to the wreck. To the east of the wreck, the ground is pretty open, so we followed the trail of debris for 75 yards or so, including the nose wheel. Back at the wreckage we found one of the engines, but no sign of the other three. Explored below it for a ways. To the west the woods are really thick. We tried going up the herdpath, then traversing west and down, but gave up and went back to the ridge and along it through really thick stuff for 100 yards before breaking out into krumholz again as we approached the ridge's east end. Nice view. Followed a couple cairns back, trending to the north side of the ridge. That path petered out, but the scrub was easier than on the ridge spine. |
