Trails
Trails: Old Speck Trail, Eyebrow Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, January 19, 2015
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The lot is mostly plowed - plenty of room. There were 5 cars when we got there at about noon.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow - Drifts, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Snow/Ice - Postholes, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Several water crossings on the AT/Old Speck trail that were a bit wet after yesterday's rain. Nothing that wasn't manageable, but there are no rocks available for hopping so make sure your shoes are waterproof! Slush/water flowing over ice.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The Eyebrow trail had a lot of step-overs/unders/arounds. Keep your eyes peeled for blazes and foot prints, it can be hard to follow in several spots. The trail diverted around them but, it was a tad time consuming.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I think a pup would be post-holing pretty miserably after the rain. May want to wait a day or so for it to freeze back up.
Bugs
Bugs: Not today!
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Found someone's stuffed Teradactyl hanging from a tree on the Eyebrow - let us know if you want him back :)

Comments
Comments: Thrilled to be back on the trail after a much too long break! Decided to go up the Eyebrow for a challenge/redlining. So glad we did, it was so much fun (for us at least)! It took longer than anticipated as the blowdowns were numerous and the beloved monorail of winter hiking was hard to find on this little used in the winter trail. Expect it to be a workout! Well worth the effort though. Once we joined up with the AT/Old Speck trail it was considerably better conditions. The wind was whipping quite a bit so I don't know how much our tracks will be visible. We came across one woman on the trail who turned around .3 from the summit - she was barebooting and creating some swiss cheese. We filled in the best we could. The .75 miles of Old Speck trail heading to the parking lot had numerous water crossings. No danger just very very wet and slushy! Great day out!
