I started up Elephant Mountain Road, following the tracks of what looked like just one snowmobile. The snow was soft and made for slower going than expected. About a mile short of the bushwhack start, the snowmobile tracks turned, leaving me to break trail. I am not certain that I started the whack in the typical spot, but it was an opening with many trees leaning over it. I headed up the cuts, dealing with spruce traps, and lots of deep snow. Occasionally I had to push through thick stuff. This was followed by some fairly open woods. This section was steeper and had some buried spruce. The summit push required me to work through some really, really thick snow covered spruce. The snow coverage was to the point that it was like stepping into a tunnel. I pushed through this and reached the highpoint. I followed my tracks out. This was a hard hike. I sunk to my waist many times and my chest a few. Lots of tough trail breaking. |
