Comments
Comments: We parked at the Sugarloaf ski area and purchased an uphill trail pass, $10 per person for the day (no one stopped us on the mountain to check). The staff recommended ascending the Windrow and Lower Timberline trails, but we followed skin tracks on the upper half of the mountain to avoid breaking out ungroomed sections of trail. The ascent was steep (2,800 feet in just 2.1 miles) and exposed; it took longer than expected. We snapped pictures at the Sugarloaf summit and descended into the woods for Spaulding. The trail was nicely packed out all the way across the ridge, and it looked like a group had continued on toward Abraham. We tagged Spaulding (the summit sign still reads 3,988 despite being on the 4k list!) and went back the way we came. The descent of Sugarloaf was a speedy glissade on groomed trails after hours. It was a cold, windy day with no views, but a great hike and nice trail conditions.
