This hike has been my nemesis for over 2 years. The last bit up East has always seemed too tough for me. (mostly because of my short legs) But today I was determined to do it, and a great suggestion from a couple I met on West made it not tough at all. Basically what they said was on the steep parts of East to mostly ignore the cairns and angle up the slope almost in small switchbacks to the right of the cairns. It worked because doing it that way made the slope into a series of reasonably sized steps. I am sure most AT thru-hikers have no problem with East. Not to say that this was an easy hike. It is steep both up West and down to the col between West and East. Glad the 2 ladders between East and West are there and very much appreciated all the rock steps going up West. I am pretty slow, so it took me most of the day to do the round trip. |
