| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Road is plowed to Pooh Corners farm - after that road had about an inch of snow to the trailhead but easily traveled - space for about 4-5 cars at the trailhead |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Ice - Black, Ice - Blue, Standing/Running Water on Trail |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
Many minor ones - easily crossed; of the 2 major - the first has partial ice covering though not solid and was breaking on the way back but with care you can pick you way across on spots above above rocks - with one step across open stream onto an ice laden rock ; second one is fully ice bridged - in testing a few places sounded hollow but it took my 200+ pounds weight without any problems. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
I cleared a number of smaller blowdowns and trimmed branches off some of the larger. Above the major stream crossings several large blowdowns that can be stepped over/around. After the wilderness sign before the col - 2 blowdowns with 20 yards - one can be stepped over, a large one blocks the trail with a path developing around on the upslope side. |

A great day out with interesting views of the Carters with low lying clouds, this is a great peak in winter approaching on an easy trail - something new for those used to coming in from 113 - well worth the trip. Consistent snow cover from trail head - an inch or two along Caribou trail with places under trees where it was less - in places 3-4 inches along stretches of the Mud Brook Trail with slightly deeper drifts. Summit had some snow. Along Caribou an interesting mix - snow but many stretches of ice underneath the snow cover, a few stretches of actual running water; a few places where a thin layer of ice covered shallow water on the trail where I and others occasionally broke through into the water; a few patches of open ice; water crossings as noted. Mud Brook - a bit deeper snow in places but no more than 6 inch drifts, a lot of ice with a number of exposed ice floes to negotiate - summit had a bit of ice, snow, along with exposed rock. All told light traction made this an easy hike. Met 2 other hikers today. |
