Took the "uphill access" from the base lodge to Saddleback Peak, which had a mix of ice, crusty snow, and firm snow. Snow deeper/nicer if you follow close along the edge of the trees; limited post-holing with snowshoes, good grip. The summit was mostly a mix of ice (mostly in low, jagged windblown formations), crusty snow, deep snow and snowdrifts in the low points, and more expansive ice sheets in spots. You could usually work around the ice sheets. The entire ridge from Saddleback to the Horn was that mix of conditions...I just kept my snowshoes on, but microspikes would have been fine on the ice, and crampons would probably be overkill for the most part. Great day; relatively warm on top (20s) but with stiff wind at times. |
