As someone mentioned previously, there's an amazing amount of snow on Baldpate and Old Speck. Driving in there's not too much, and then like a mile from the trailheads it's like driving into winter. There was snow this week at higher altitudes, so all the trees were covered in snow and ice at the summits, making them sag down to face level. I started early, and the trail was frozen solid all the way to East. Light traction was nice but mostly unnecessary, except for the ascent up East, where crampons probably wouldn't have hurt. Wind chill at the summit was in the teens; when I got to the base it was 55. Cool day. |
