Comments
Comments: Day 2 and 3 of a Grafton Loop hike, south on the west side and north on the east side (this report). Make sure you have enough water starting on the trail. I pumped from the Bear River first. Water at Stewart camp site (4.9 miles) is not flowing, but there are clear standing pools you can filter from in a pinch. First reliable flowing water is at Chase Hill Brook (6.3 miles). Water is flowing at Town Corner campsite and the trail crosses several flowing streams after that. There is a nice campsite ("Knoll") about half way between Town Corner and Lane campsites. This is not mentioned in the most recent AMC Maine Mountain guide, but appears on the map as a spur on the north side of the trail and is indicated on some trail signs. There is a clear trail that crosses the brook. Last reliable water NB until Bald Pate shelter is at last crossing of Wright Brook.

This was a great hike, but I wish I had planned on an extra day to spend more time, and to stay at Lane camp site.
