Comments
Comments: Since we were in the area for the weekend, and this peak has been on my to-do list for a while, we hit up the trail to West Kennebago. While the 11th edition of the Maine Mountain Guide leads the reader to believe they are ascending the highest peak on the ridge, the reality is that the trail goes to the south peak, which is 40+ feet lower than the middle (and highest) peak, which is a bushwhack. We spent some time on the way up exploring the remains of the warden's cabin, and checking out the spring, which was running cold and clear. The fire tower on the summit was removed in 2012, and since Rachel's last visit in 2015, a shack with a summit sign that sat outside the fencing for the communications tower, was removed in the intervening years. Good views from the wooden helipad platform just prior to the summit, and from the summit itself where the footings are all that remain of the tower. Great to enjoy the area and fall-like temperatures with Rachel and Tom.
