| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
We parked just before the bridge near the end of the road to the Notch Trailhead. The north side of the bridge is washed out at the abutment and didn't think it was worth the risk to save walking a hundred feet. A few cars did after throwing logs in the hole in an attempt to fill it the deep wash. The drive on Success Pond Road from Berlin was especially bumpy the first couple miles from ATV use but still after that there were some big pot holes. AWD cars can handle it when driving a reasonable speed. |

The Notch Trail is a nice trail that follows along the bank of Shelter Brook for most of the way, it's quite pleasant. We hiked to not quite to the end of the trail and turned north into the woods to whack to Mahoosuc Mt. The woods were decent, we stayed just north of the ridge. We were make our way through a blow-down section just by going around them. We hit the false bump and then pushed through some tight spruce short distance of before popping out into the open on ledge and alpine plants. There was also a deep muddy bog, bryan stuck his pole in it and it went all way deep into the muck and he didn't reach the bottom. What views we wandered around taking in the sights before to the summit. A small rock cairn rests on the open ledge highpoint, summit is recognized a short distance away. This was one of the most rewarding bushwhacks in terms of finding a grand vista that just seemed to go on and on. From Mount Washington to deep into the NH North Country and into Maine, oh so many wind turbine farms. On the way back we started back by staying on the ridge hunting for more outlooks. We had obstructed views down into Mahoosuc Notch and of the granite wall made by Fulling Mill Mt. When it got too steep we cut back to the other side of the ridge and more or less retraced our steps back down to the Notch Trail. We headed to the end of the Notch Trail and turned south on the Mahoosuc Trail. It is a steep climb complete with an iron rung ladder. Just before the col to South Peak we headed into the woods and went stragiht at Fulling Mill Mt. The Whack felt short through decent woods all the way to the no view recognized summit. This was a super day. |
