Comments
Comments: Took chimney pond trail from roaring brook. Trail is well packed to chimney pond. Saddle trail from chimney was with deeper snow but broken. Snow was thick and crusty from the recent thaw and rain, and not breaking. The steep section to the saddle was easily climbed with ice axe and traction. I used snow shoes all day, but crampons would work as well. Once on the ridge, visibility was about 50' with blowing snow. Used compass/GPS for navigation. Cairns only visible about 60 percent of the time. The ridge was mostly hard ice and snow with little rock to the summit of Baxter. The hike back and up to hemline was the same. Hamlin ridge trail from the summit back to chimney pond was more wind blown with a lot of exposed rock, but well marked. Side note, the ski in on the tote road was excellent with about an inch of fresh snow over an already deep base
