Stratton Brook Pond Road is very well packed down due to being a snowmobile route. After crossing the foot bridge and starting up Fire Warden, I continued bare-booting for about 3 miles and then attached snowshoes. In the steepest section my snowshoes were slipping and I tried on Hillsounds (light traction) and then went back to snowshoes wishing I had medium/full crampons for the steepest last 3/4 mile. Overall the trail was packed down well by previous snowshoers of several days ago but there was about 4-6 inches of fresh powder and then certain blown in areas. I tagged Avery with little effort trying to follow the blown in trail. Great views and some nippy wind. A mixture of bare spots on exposed areas and adjacent snowfield (hard and soft). |
