Comments
Comments: The good news for anyone looking to bag these tomorrow is there is a track that was relatively stable for large stretches today, and with tomorrow being much colder it should be quite firm. The bad news is the trail took a bit of a beating today. The warm temps and rain made for soft snow, and lots of postholing, even with snowshoes - not that you could have done it without them today. Postholed knee to thigh deep frequently, and based on the further damage on the way back I'd say the four people I saw all experienced the same thing. Made for slower going and more work. There is a notable stretch just past the jct with Horn's Pond Trail that also saw significant bareboot postholing, so that stretch may be tough. The section just below the summit of West was lousy with soft snow and spruce traps, so take care. It snowed about 5 times during my hike, and it was snowing at the summits (as well as windy and cold) so I only had limited views, but it was still a great day out with summits to myself.
