Little bit of everything. Given the forecast, I was surprised to be the first car at the lot at 10:30. Trail was packed sidewalk with lots of ice and a few bare spots (some were fairly long and were wet and muddy) up until the ledges. From there to the summit was bare, except for the occasional patch and a large drift just below the summit. Views over to the Whites were great, and I got the summit to myself for 15 minutes or so. I had initially intended to head over to Shawnee Peak ski area on the other end of the mountain, but Bald Peak Trail across the ridge was still 3 feet of snow. It hadn't seen as much use, so the monorail was unstable, and I hadn't brought my snowshoes. I started postholing, so I stopped at the ledges on Bald Peak and turned back rather than slog on; the temps were rising quickly, and it was only going to get worse. Was nice to bareboot for the first time in months, and to wear only a t-shirt. |
