Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The only crossing, that of the Cold River, is impassable at present water levels. The board over the spillway at Chester Dam is not yet in place, and the water was roaring through. We waded through the river about 150 yards upstream on our way in, and about 30 yards upstream on the way out, both times in nearly waist deep water. Felt better on the way out.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Plenty of downed lumber along the route, mostly on Deer Hills Trail between Big and Little Deer Hill, though there was one large birch of note across the trail between Deer Hill Spring and Deer Hill Road.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pepper was enjoying the many opportunities to cool off and have a drink... he especially kept trying to get into the middle of Deer Hill Spring!
Bugs
Bugs: Surprisingly annoying! Black flies and mosquitoes. It's too early for this business!

Comments
Comments: Up and down, and out and back, that's the story of redlining all the trails on the Deer Hills. What they don't pack for height, they pack in the steep climbs up to the peaks, and the trails leading up and around them. Ran into John Sobetzer and Pepper in the parking lot, and would see them several more times throughout our day, as they did the trails in somewhat the opposite manner we did. It was a pleasure to have some trail time with you both! Slick rocks were ever present on Ledges Trail, covered with leaves in spots, and the sidehill on Deer Hills By-pass was leaf covered and slippery. Great day out on the Deer Hills, knocking off trails with Rachel!
