Appalachian Trail from Carriage Road to route 27
3-day backpacking. Difficult conditions with lots of snow at higher elevation. There was at least 3 feet of snow at the caretaker hut at Avery Peak. At Horns Pond campsite, most tent sites were covered with snow. We even needed the snowshoes to go to the waterhole and to the toilet... The snow was deep and soft. Even with snowshoes, it was difficult not to posthole. It would have been awful to do it without snowshoes. On a nicer note: we saw a super cute bear cub on Carriage road on our way in (Carriage road was open). We didn't see momma bear. |
