Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Mile Notch trail has multiple blowdowns but plenty of room to maneuver. All three trails are entirely or partially in a wilderness area, there are no blazes and the trailbed can be obscure in spots. It just requires occasional stops to ensure you are still on the route. The toughest route finding was on the north end of Cold Brook Trail. It drops down a slope and on occasion drainage trenches look like a trail. If in doubt bear left.

Bugs
Bugs: Yup, plenty of black flies for most to the day, my partner wore a head net I toughed it out without one. Coming down Cold Brook trail it was mix of Black flies and mosquitoes. We didnt take a lot of breaks as once we stopped the black flies rapidly caught up with us. It was a bit of run from the bugs day.I had one wood tick that made if past my treated socks and gaiters onto my leg. I started out with zip pants tucked into my socks but when it warmed up I switched to shorts

Comments
Comments: The hardwoods are just budding out, the colors are near fluorescent green in spots. Plenty of understory plants. Saw one lady slipper and various trilliums. Ran into a Maine F&W employee sitting on an outcrop with a bug net observing the cliffs on the west side of Miles Notch. We didnt talk much but asked him if he was looking for peregrines and he said yes. We didnt hear any but the cliffs look like a nice nesting spot.

The best view is near the top of Red Rock Mountain. There are two unmarked but obvious spur paths to the south the easterly one is the best one and ends up on a long sloping cliff. Its a great spot for a break with views of the adjacent red cliffs and south to Kezar lake.

Its a nice loop hike way to the east of the usual WMNF hustle and bustle.

We did see a couple of patches of snow but they were just a curiosity.
