Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Attempted to access the northern trailhead in Maine from Flat Rd in Bethel. Flat Rd is a paved, maintained road to the border with WMNF. This is where Flat Rd becomes FR 7. FR 7 is unpassable as of today. A large truck looks to have recently made it over the snow berm and a bit down FR 7 but I didn’t walk down the road so I don’t know how far they made it. It would have to be a vehicle with high clearance, 4 wheel drive (4WD), and probably chains. This morning FR 7 was icy, I couldn’t even walk on it in bareboots. Also, at the start of FR 7 is a snowplow turn around. There are multiple signs saying no parking in the turn around. There was no other parking available on this narrow road. There is another access point off ME 5 but I didn’t check it out.

Comments
Comments: Today’s goal was to scout out gravel/ dirt roads that are unmaintained in winter around western Maine to see what’s open or driveable. After a few stops in and around Evans Notch we determined that unmaintained winter roads are not open and/or passable yet in this area. Maybe in another 2-4 weeks...
