Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Many water crossings on this loop. All rock hoppable with relatively dry feet. Water running high but not extreme. The crossing near the parking lot on Caribou Trail would be difficult if water gets much higher - a tease there with the washed out bridge.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Several step overs and some duck unders. None extreme. Some erosion on upper Mud Brook. Very few blazes throughout. Trail generally easy to follow apart from the summit. Note that Mud Brook takes a sharp turn right by the summit. Look for the trail sign about 20ft north/east of the summit for direction.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Several happy pups out today. Seems like a good loop for hiking-experienced dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: None

Comments
Comments: Departed on a wet and foggy day. Prepare for damp but not soaked shoes on this one. No views in today's fog, but a beautiful loop hike. Went up Mud Brook, down Caribou, though I think either way would be fine.

Several water crossings here, with wet leaves and rocks throughout, but little running water down the trails. Many muddy pits along Mud Brook, mostly avoidable. I found Caribou a slower descent than expected, navigating many wet rocks, slick leaves, and water crossings. It's not bad, just a little more rugged than I expected.

Navigation a touch tricky on the summit. Look for the small cairns, and very old blazes on the rocks.

Many nice miles along brooks, some great silence on Mud Brook when the climb really starts, and several waterfalls along Caribou. Beautiful woods, a great hike.
