Bigelow has been seeing a lot of action this year. I came expecting to see a few tracks leading up to the peaks based on reports from this week but I was pleasantly surprised to see a very well packed out snowshoe trail for most of the way, so packed down that it rivals the well hiked trails in the White Mountains.
First 2 miles to the bridge is snowmobile trail, then a well packed down snow shoe trail nearly to the Moose Falls campsite. From Moose Falls campsite the trail is still packed down but there is also some very minor wind swept snow. The rock case is a continuously steep stretch of grippy compact'ish snow that my lightening ascents handled wonderfully. From the col to each peak it is easy to follow tracks from previous hikers until the tree line where there has been wind obscuring the tracks but it is still relatively easy going.
As a note when I passed Horns Pond Trail there were one or two tracks, not sure how far up they go, if to the top. Also, the Appalachian Trail where it crosses Stratton Brook Pond Rd is well packed out from snowshoes in both directions (towards the Horns and towards Rt 27). Route 27 also looked plowed with ample parking. |
