Comments
Comments: Did a nice 8.5 mile loop on snowshoes. Full snow coverage on all trails and terrain. Friday's light powder storm has been through one refreeze cycle and has consolidated nicely. Trails near the main summit (First Hill) and out to Second Hill were well packed. Only light traction needed today, but they may get icy and or slushy over the next couple of days with the daylight temps rising above freezing. The only ice I encountered all day was descending down Vulture View from the summit to the Rim Trail, where the snow was scoured from sledders. The trails out to Third Hill (including Incline, Darter and Third Hill) were far less travelled, and unfortunately the trails were torn up by barebooters. Those trails will get ugly when they freeze, especially the part of the Third Mountain Trail to the north of the summit. Despite snow pack over 12" I didn't see anyone else on snowshoes all day. Saw only a couple of people while out near Second and Third Hill, and the summit of First Hill had less of a crowd than I expected on a bluebird day. Great views out over the ocean and all the way north to the Presidentials
