Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, June 5, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Standard WMNF parking ($5) at Brickett Place. Today there was actually a Forest Service guy there selling passes, maps, and other things out of the garage next to the house. But if no one is there, there’s a standard self-pay slot. There were a few other cars there today, though several were Forest Service (rangers and trail crew).
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Just be aware that the moss and slime on the rocks can be very slick and is sometimes hard to see. Otherwise the crossings are all super simple.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails are in excellent condition (rangers and trail crews were out today). There is one fresh blowdown on Bickford Slides trail that’s a little tough to duck under (which is the easiest way around it). It could use some attention. Bickford Slides trail also runs up the middle of the Brook in one or two spots and it can be a little tricky to follow (one old blowdown threw us for a loop at one point).
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw three who were all traveling together. One of them decided to roll around in the dirt in the middle of the trail. Good thing it wasn’t muddy...
Bugs
Bugs: Ferocious. Huge flies on Blueberry and swarms of black flies on Speckled bit right through several layers of DEET. Had to reapply it in copious amounts. Skeeters and gnats near Ames. Mountain forecast said there would be wind. There wasn’t.

Comments
Comments: Is it too early to miss winter hiking? With the threat of thunderstorms we opted for something more protected. See the note above on bugs. Heat and humidity were unpleasant until the clouds rolled in. Promised wind never materialized. Saw a handful of other groups including a pair of Forest Service employees. Did I mention the bugs?
