Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks North Brother, ME
Trails
Trails: Marston Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Thursday, June 10, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: No other cars when I arrived at 9:00 AM or when I left at 5:00 PM on a Thursday. There is an outhouse at the trailhead. It does have a door, though not immediately obvious. It is held back by a hook that you need to release to close the door.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All rock hoppable.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A few blowdowns, mostly easy step-overs, one straddle-over. Trail is generally well-marked with blue blazes, but could use a few more blazes or cairns above treeline, especially near the summit. At the upper junction of the Mount Coe Trail and Marston Trail, there is no sign mentioning the Mount Coe Trail, only Marston. The summit sign on North Brother is broken, lying on the rocks in several pieces. I had to prop it up on a rock for my summit selfie.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: No dogs allowed in Baxter State Park.
Bugs
Bugs: Black flies and mosquitoes were out, but not too bad. A little DEET kept them from landing or biting. Some bee-like thing was dive-bombing me at the summit, but didn't sting me.

Comments
Comments: This is a great hike. Trail is in good shape. There is occasional mud and water, but really quite dry for this time of year. There are a few views on the way up, but the view from the top is amazing. Panoramic 360, Katahdin, other mountains, lakes and woods every way you turn. Beautiful. Remember to sign the register at the trailhead when you start. The rangers do check to see who's out there and whether they've returned, so it adds some extra security. The rangers at Baxter State Park are great: friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.
