Comments
Comments: I didn't have to work until afternoon today, so I decided to climb my first new 4,000 footer since Hamlin in 2018. Spaulding is about a 10 mile round-trip from the gate on Caribou Valley Road. After crossing the river, the trail climbs steeply to the rim of a spectacular cirque on Sugarloaf. After passing the side trail to Sugarloaf, the trail follows the ridge between Sugarloaf and Spaulding. This section was pretty easy going and was the last section of the AT completed in 1937. After one final steep climb up the summit cone, Spaulding's summit is reached on a short spur trail. There are views to the north just past the summit and a variety of other viewpoints which made this a beautiful hike!
