Comments
Comments: Our first hike of the trip was up Number 5 Mountain, which is one that I've been wanting to get to for a while. On the way in, we saw a moose on the Gold Brook Road, and got a flat tire on the Spencer Road.

The first part of the trail was a pretty straightforward walk on an old woods road. After about half a mile, the trail turned into a footpath with well constructed staircases and switchbacks. About a mile in, we started seeing snow. The snow eventually transitioned from small patches to complete coverage in the woods which was 2-4 feet deep in most places.

It took a lot of postholing to make it the final mile to the summit, but it was worth it. The views are really some of the best in the state, and the 360 degree panorama included the High Peaks, Boundary Ranges, the Moosehead Lake region, and Katahdin.
