Our destination on our second day of the trip was Sally Mountain. I opted to do it as a loop hike, instead of the more common out-and-back, which made for a bit over 10 miles round-trip. After a ~4 mile hike on the railroad tracks, I took a right onto the west side of the loop trail. This section of trail is lightly used, but very well marked and easy to follow.
After a steep climb away from the tracks, the trail mellowed a bit, and started winding through beautiful spruce-fir forest. It then started climbing over ledges to reach the west peak. This peak had the best views of the hike, and is where we ate lunch.
In about 0.1 mile, the trail reached the true summit of the mountain, and the location of the old fire tower. There were some nice directional views here too, but not as nice as the views at the west peak. From there, it was a straightforward descent back to the railroad tracks.
We crossed the tracks, and followed the short trail to Sally Beach, where we swam in Attean Pond, before returning along the tracks to the parking area. |
