Started from the base lodge of Saddleback resort and hiked up following the path of the quad. Upon reaching the top of this lift I followed the Tricolor ski trail to the top of skiable terrain and located the beginning of the trail to the summit of Saddleback, located behind and to the right of a little building. Snow on the trail required Microspikes, but I took them off shortly after, once the trail opened up above tree-line and the snow disappeared. From the summit of Saddleback I followed the AT into the col and was met with a lot of water, mud, and snow in areas where the trail goes back into the trees or out of direct sunlight. The snow in the col was mostly soft and slushy, making it very easy to posthole and sink in. I imagine that with the warming temperatures that in a week or so this will not be nearly as much of an issue, but for now be prepared for wet feet. The cling up to The Horn was easy and more dry, and the foot prints I had made on the way over made the return trip much easier. |
