Comments
Comments: The (redlining) vacation continues… first hike of the day was this very pleasant loop around this small mountain. It was my favorite hike on the island thus far! A much more lightly trodden trail, not overcrowded, nice ridge line, fantastic views, and easy. Quick 0.3mi hike to the summit at a generally moderate grade. Some steps built in. Trail was wet as were the rocks at times from rain the evening before but not very slick. Along the ridge, there were a handful of small mud pits to avoid. Fantastic ridge walk before descending more a bit more steeply to Valley Cove, then contouring along it to an access point. My understanding is that the trail continuing ahead along this contour at the jct is Valley Cove Trail, which was closed due to nesting preforms falcons), and what we turned left onto to follow back to the car is Valley Cove Fire Rd. This road was slightly uphill for a ways before descending slightly again back to the parking area. Despite this loop really being on two different trails/roads, only one of which is called the Flying Mountain Trail, the MMG just calls this loop the Flying Mountain Trail. We followed the guidebook’s directions. Gaia had us at 1.6mi and 300ft of gain; a bit different than the guidebook’s stats.
