Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Wednesday, June 1, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Large parking lot at trailhead in Grafton State Park. Used as base for Old Speck, Table Rock, and Baldpate hikes. There is an outhouse at the lot. Fee schedule is posted. I qualified for free parking. If I read correctly, the fee box is located down route 26 at the Screw Augur parking lot.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Brook crossings easy on rocks.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: 10-12" diameter spruce across trail in one of the sags before reaching the 3-mile outlook. Otherwise, no other obstructions on the trails. A two-log width bridge across a wet slanted ledge has the end of one log in poor condition that may fail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fine for dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: Almost none. No strong breezes. Not sure why. Not complaining!
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Found a pair of sunglasses just off trail at a ledge used to observe the cascades.

Comments
Comments: The Old Speck Trail is quite rocky with lots of ledges. Today, these surfaces were mostly dry with sufficient footholds on the wet rocks to allow for secure passage.
The cascades made for a pleasant accompaniment for the walk at the lower elevations. These cascades are most impressive during the spring thaw.
Good views from many of the ledges along the trail especially just below the termination of the Old Speck Trail at the Mahoosuc Trail. Great view from the summit tower with the downlook into Mahoosuc Notch particularly striking. To the north, the NW ME mountains (Abraham, Sugarloaf, Elephant, Old Blue, etc) can be seen. The Presidential Range was in clouds.
Only met four other hikers on the trail today. No AT thru hikers.
