 | Comments: |
Potato Hill Road and the unnamed road that follow are narrow and extremely rough, including a few steep pitches of loose rock. My Honda Fit managed to get to the trailhead and back out, but it wasn't pretty, and I wouldn't be in a hurry to try it again. There is no longer a gate at the "trailhead" (where ITS 84/89 turn north) so if you have a high-clearance vehicle and make it that far comfortably, you can likely drive the additional mile to the junction with the Fly Rod Crosby Trail. There was a Jeep parked at this junction--the only other vehicle I saw. Directions from Maine Trail Finder were good for getting to the trailhead. On the way out there is a fork where ITS 84 and 89 split. Potato Hill Road is ITS 84 on the left, sign for Salem.
The walk on the ATV and Fly Rod Crosby trails was fairly tedious, especially on the way out, but the rest of the hike was glorious. The upper half of Berry Picker's is mostly through open ledges with views to Abraham, Blue, Jackson & Tumbledown. |
