Trails: Grafton Loop Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, August 1, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: 5 cars in the Grafton Notch Loop parking lot. .6mi is an accurate measure from parking lot to trailhead. Watch for traffic that is towing particularly on that section of road.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Minimal issues with rockhopping. Brooks very, very dry. The small "flume" in the AMC guide is a trickle.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Two stepovers, minor maneuvering needed. Be advised that pants are much appropriate until you are far enough along to be into the woods as the grass on the tote road is thick and high. I didn't see any ticks but I can't imagine there are none.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: Fine when under way/moving. Slightly bothersome when standing but not to the level of needing face net. Buzz Away brand repellent required full coverage of skin and clothes/shoes.

Comments
Comments: Saw a trail runner on the way down from doing the loop (?) Red beard/blue shorts. No other persons. Turned around before the switchbacks as I was getting hot.

The campsite is nice - 2 full tent platforms - one of which looks good for a hammock. Outhouse and bear box are on site.

The campsite location seems to be just slightly above the bug-zone, so that those lodging at the site will have a slight breeze. There's an interesting graded area off to the south east of the campsite, visible from the outhouse+tent platforms, which looks like an old woods road (?) or something graded into the land when the campsites were installed (?). Just my observation.

Overall, the trail isn't that difficult - solidly in the moderate category - but there really aren't any views until you are a mile past the campsite - and even then, it's kind of meh.

Bear River was tempting to jump in from along the river and could have been accessed easily - no long pants meant another time. There were some wild blueberries growing in the shade along the lower half of the trail.
