Comments
Comments: All conditions prior to Jan 7th snow event. 5 day trip into the park including one night at Roaring brook and 3 nights at Chimney. Tote road/ RB road had minimal snow cover but sufficient enough to pull a sled into RB. Skis possible if rock skis as mixed snow and gravel on road. Chimney Pond trail remains bony and not conducive to bringing a sled or skis. 3 inches of snow at Chimney stake when we left the morning of the 7th. As for Katahdin, Saddle was rocky with a hollow at times remnant snow pack and fresh powder. Further up the slide a mix of powder and wind slab. Full traction could be helpful here, sharp spikes were sufficient.
Table lands to Baxter Peak was mostly hard crust with occasional powder. Heading over to Hamlin was softer conditions with mixed rock and difficult to discern the trail due to rime covered cairns. Harder crust toward Hamlin summit. Down Hamlin ridge was rocks and powder with occasional sections of wind slab or hard crust. Boulder field just prior to treeline was interesting to navigate. We also ventured over to Blueberry knoll on both Friday and Saturday. Leaving the park conditions much of the same as journey in. Will also note there is currently a four legged tenant at RB bunkhouse so hang your food.
